Alexandria's vision is a local-first personal knowledge base that handles your entire flow, including personal media files end-to-end. Your data stays on your device and in plain files, while still offering modern convenience.
What we aim for:
- Local-first: fast, reliable, private by default. Works offline.
- Media end-to-end: import, tag, preview, and manage personal media (photos, videos, audio, docs) alongside notes.
- Multi-platform: desktop app built with Tauri to run on major OSes.
- Sync across devices: optional sync so your library is available everywhere you work.
- Simple core: a small Rust engine that everything else builds on.
Guiding principles:
- Your data, your files: human-readable, portable storage.
- Tags over folders: flexible structure that grows with you.
- Lightweight properties: add structure only when needed.
- Plain language: clear UX for non-technical users.
- Open & extensible: keep the core small and enable plugins/UIs.
Where we're going next:
-
Cross-device sync choices (bring your own storage).
-
Rich media pipeline (thumbnails, metadata extraction).
-
Better import/export (e.g., Notion, markdown flavors).
-
Powerful search and filters without complexity.
